Popov Alexander Vladimirovich
biography
I was born in1951, in Moscow. After leaving the secondary school I studied at the Moscow institute of electronic and mechanical engineering, at the faculty of applied mathematics.
During summer vacations I went for restoration works to memorial estate of the artist Polenov V.D., situated on the river Oka, in the Tula region. In the museum “Polenovo” I took part in restoration of the Trinity church in the village of Byokhovo, constructed under the project of the artist Polenov V.D. All following vacations I worked as the restorer in “Polenovo” and later in the old Russian town Pereyaslavl - Zalessky. During these works I received a specialty of a mason of the sixth category. Then I understood, that architecture, crafts and restoration are my calling.
Having received the diploma of the engineer of mathematics I went to work in the museum “Polenovo”, continuing be engaged in restoration. At first I finished restoration of the Trinity church in the village of Byokhovo and then I took part in restoration of the workshop of the artist Polenov V.D., the so-called «Abbey».
In 1977 I entered the Moscow Architectural institute. Instead of diploma of graduating from the institute of electronic and mechanical engineering I showed drawings of my project and photos of the already restored "Abbey".
In the course of restoration of the church and "Abbey" I mastered carpenter’s and joiner's crafts. I liked to work with wood and soon I received the sixth category of carpenter and joiner.
In 1981 I graduated from the Moscow Architectural institute. In the same year I finished restoration works in the "Abbey" and handed over object with an excellent estimation.
In 1981 I went to the Arkhangelsk region to be engaged in restoration of wooden architecture of Russian North.
There I worked for seven years as an architect and carpenter. More over I conducted all production works on restoration of the church of Dmitry Solunsky in Uftyuga.
In the course of these works I managed to rehabilitate historical technologies and tools with which church was built. To do it I
studied archaeological and archival materials and documents.
Further it appeared, that the technologies discovered by me were extended in Europe in the Middle Ages, but in the modern history these technologies were forgotten.
1991 I was awarded the State prize.
In1988 I founded my own restoration workshop with the aim to unite designing and manufacture. But I lacked experienced carpenters and joiners who could work with the help of historical technologies, therefore I started to train young people in my workshop and on being restored objects. The skills from more experienced masters are transferred to learners in the course of work.
Having finished the restoration works in Uftyuga I started to restore an architectural ensemble in the village of Nyonoksa in the Arkhangelsk region. That ensemble consists of two wooden churches (the summer church of Trinity and the winter church of St.Nicolai) and a bell tower.
We began to restore the bell tower. It appeared to be a rare rebuilt construction, I had never seen before. We restored it using the same method of rebuilding.
The next object of restoration was the church of St.Nicolai. It is one of the few preserved warm wooden churches which was heated "in a black way”.
Unfortunately I couldn’t restore it to the end because since 1995 the restoration was not financed. My pupils finished to restore the church of St. Nicolai only in the year 2008.
Since 1996 till 2003 I had been working in Moscow. At that time, money for peripheral, wooden monuments were not allocated.
In Moscow I took part in restoration of such monuments of architecture as:
- the house of architect Konstantin Melnikov;
-the house with a wing in the country-side of Morozov constructed under the project of architect Shekhtel, situated near Moscow in Odintsovo;
-the Moscow architectural institute, monument of architecture of XVII-ÕIÕ cent.;
-the library of foreign literature of Rudomino (project and reconstruction);
-an ordinary building in the centre of Moscow, situated in Pjatnitsky street (project and reconstruction).
Since 2000, I have been working in the Kirillo-Belozersky memorial estate, in the town of Kirillov in the Vologda region. There is my company “the Restoration centre - architecture, manufacture, training” there.
In 2007 our centre finished to restore the church of Presentation of the Virgin in the temple with one-pillar refectory built in 1519, walls of a tower of the XVII century, monks’ cells of the XVII century and other constructions. We started restoration works on wooden church of Elijah the Prophet in the village of Tsypino, in Kirillov district, Vologda region. A wooden church with the same name but situated in the town of Belozersk we began to restore too. Besides, I am engaged in designing and building of modern houses.
I also work as a teacher in the restoration center.
In 1999, at the session of restorers held in Mexico “The Standards of restoration of monuments of wooden architecture» were accepted. Principles of restoration of wooden architecture discovered by me in Uftyuga were put in a basis of those Standards. In the early nineties these principles were formulated (regarding restoration with the use of historical technologies, tools and design) and fulfilled in the mid-nineties in the village of Nyonoksa.

Lupushor Lyudmila Alexandrovna biography
I was born in Kishinev, Moldova. Since my childhood I had a passion for painting and music. In 1980 after graduating from the secondary school and the art school I entered the Leningrad Institute of painting, sculpture and architecture and in 1989 I finished my study there having received the profession of architect and artist. During my study I did practical work in the Central Asia (the town of Pendzhikent near Samarkand) and in the North Caucasus (the village of Teberda near Karachayevsk).
Since 1989 I worked in the association of restorers of the Vologda region. There I mapped out projects of restoration of monuments of the Kirillo-Belozersky memorial estate. Among their number there was a project of joiner's works in the Dormition cathedral.
Besides I did several measurements and adaptation projects of monuments of architecture of the XIX century in Kirillov, a guest house for a Vologda firm, a monument of architecture of the XIX century in the village of Nikulino near Goritsy. I also designed some new houses in Kirillov and Ferapontovo.
Unfortunately some projects of the constructions situated outside the monastery were not executed for the various reasons not dependent on me, or
they were carried out with deviation from the plan and even with ignoring of design offers. An obvious example is the shop "Luman" built in the town of Kirillov. Even if the ground floor is made less or more according to the project, the general appearance of the building was changed. Suffice it to say that from a two-storied building it turned to a three-storied one...
Since 2001 I worked as the artist in the village of Ferapontovo, in scientific and exposition department of the museum of frescos of Dionysius where I was occupied with preparation and registration of exhibitions, taking pictures of the exhibits of the museum collections. I also took part in working out the concept of structure of the museum situated on the hill of Tsypino.
Since 2005 I have been conducting courses of painting, drawing and restoration bases in “the Restoration centre - architecture, manufacture, training”. And from November, 16, 2006 I have been working there as the architect.
In the restoration centre, with the assistance and participation of the architects A.V.Popov and A.P.Maltsev I do measurements and the project of restoration and adaptation of the monument of wooden architecture of the XV century, the church of Deposition of the robe from the village of Borodava. Various monuments of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery are also under my supervision, such as the Bell tower of the XVIII century, the Kitchen, the church of Presentation of the Virgin in the temple with the Refectory and the Cellar’s house.
I also took part in measurements of the wooden church of Elijah the Prophet of the XVII century in the town of Belozersk and did design works of some modern buildings.
Having begun to work in the Restoration centre, I was pleasantly surprised at the atmosphere of friendly mutual assistance. The center has interest in qualitative manufacture and in professionalism of people working there.
As the artist I participated in several exhibitions:
- my personal exhibition, Kishinev (Moldova),1999;
- «Two views on Ferapontovo» - my pictures were exhibited together with the works of the artist I.Shchechkina, Moscow, the House of architect, 2000;
- « Painting of L.Lupushor and aquarelle of I.Shchechkina», Ferapontovo, 2000
- my personal exhibitions in Ferapontovo and Kirillov, 2008.
Since 2006 I have been participating in exhibitions held in Ferapontovo each autumn.
I am married. We have four children. My two daughters are studying at higher educational institutions (at the Moscow State University and at the Academy of arts in St. Petersburg).
