School of restorers
The organizer of the restoration centre Alexander Popov knew well, that carpenters and joiners who could work using historical technologies, are very rare. Therefore he started to train youth in this craft in a workshop in the Arkhangelsk region. In 2003 school of restorers for training carpenters-restorers with knowledge of historical technologies was founded in Kirillov at the initiative of A.Popov with the assistance of the Fund “Support of monuments of wooden architecture”, Professional school ¹ 59 of Kirillov, district administration and at the financial support of Institute “Open society” (the Fund of Sores).
The place for foundation of the restoration center was chosen not casually. It is situated near famous monuments of wooden architecture of the Vologda, Arkhangelsk, Leningrad, Yaroslavl areas and the republic Karelia. The training centre is simultaneously an industrial base for conducting restoration works. School of restorers (Educational unit ¹1) was festively opened on the 22nd of February in 2003. The first school-leavers finished it in March, 25th, 2004. They were nine new experts having shown a good level of training and excellent practical skills of restoration of monuments. From 2003 till 2008 48 persons have passed vocational training, professional retraining, courses of improvement of qualification. The educational experience of the center showed the expedience of the following actions:
- Carrying two or three years courses of training;
- Imposition of new specializations of masons and smiths;
- A close connection of training with restoration practice;
- Studying and fixing monuments of wooden architecture, designing their restoration with a full complex of necessary researches;
- Restoration of monuments of wooden architecture with application of traditional ways of laying in and processing timber and historical technologies carpenter works;
- Studying and experimental application of modern means and methods of preservation and protection of wooden monuments;
- Improvement of professional skills of restorers in the field of knowledge of historical building technologies;
- Propagation of knowledge about wooden architectural monuments and other kinds of creativity of the people of the northern Russia;
- Organization of the international Center of studying historical building crafts on the basis of the restoration centre situated in Kirillov.
These principles are in the basis of the activity of school.
The program of training in the Educational unit ¹1 includes subjects of theoretical and practical cycles specifically basis of architecture, Russian wooden architecture, materials technology, restoration basis, technology of restoration works, in-service training and practice.
The teaching structure consists in the majority of employees of the centre. These are architects-designers, technologists, restorers (carpenters, joiners, masons, etc.), having a long-term theoretical experience of training in the given area, and also considerable experience of practical activities at restoration of monuments of special complexity.
The special advantage of the centre is the fact that students are taught by the art critics and historians of the Kirillo-Belozersky historic-architectural and art memorial estate and the Museum of Frescoes of Dionysius. Pupils have a possibility to get acquainted with the historical monuments and unique exhibits of different periods.
Pupils get acquainted with restoration works directly on historical monuments where A.Popov's centre conducts restoration: the church of Elijah the Prophet (1755) situated on the Tsypino hill; the church of Elijah the Prophet (1700) in village Samino in Vytegra district; objects of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery such as the church of Presentation in the Temple with one pillar chamber (1519); walls, towers and the brotherly house of the XVII century, etc. An office of the ancient craft tools of the XV – XX centuries was founded on the basis of the centre. Many famous persons got acquainted with school and activity of the center. Among them is A.S.Sokolov the Minister of culture of the Russian Federation, B.A.Bojarskov the Head of Federal service of supervision of observation of legality in sphere of mass communication and protection of a cultural heritage, A.V.Kibovsky the Head of Federal service of supervision of observance of the legislation in the field of protection cultural heritage . V.E.Pozgalyov the Governor of the Vologda region often visits the center. With his assistance many our initiatives came true. Getting acquainted with the centre the Governor characterized the training process at school so: «… they are not trained so as in the technical college, they are trained in the course of work because restoration business needs to be studied at work; not only the theory is read to them, but also experience, practice is given».
Nowadays the centre has the license (A ¹138752) for:
- training restorers of monuments of wooden architecture;
- training restorers of monuments of stone architecture;
- retraining restorers of monuments of wooden and stone architecture;
- carrying study courses;
- carrying courses of qualification’s improvement.
